Hey! I’m Steph

As a 39-year-old graphics designer from Arizona, my hectic schedule often leaves me with little time to prepare nutritious meals. To maintain a healthy diet without sacrificing too much of my time, I’ve turned to meal replacement shakes. Intrigued by the variety available, I’ve decided to compare the highest-rated meal replacement shakes in the US to find the best option that aligns with my busy lifestyle and health goals.

The 9 meal replacement shakes I tried.

Getting ready for some scientific testing!

Want the short version? I personally tried 9 different meal replacement shakes. All the meal replacements I experimented with are shown in the image below. Click to skip to the winner that worked best for me.

I reviewed all these meal replacement shakes, and the Biome Secret Superfood Meal Replacement Shake came out on top.

A little backstory…

I'm Steph, a 39-year-old web designer living in Arizona (also I'm a mom of 1 beautiful daughter who is the love of my life!!).

Balancing a demanding career with personal health goals has always been a challenge for me. With a busy schedule at a big corporate, finding time for proper meals often takes a backseat. In fact, most days I barely have enough time for lunch - let alone to pre-pack a lunch in my mornings.

I've tried various approaches to maintain my energy and well-being, from pre-packed meals to expensive quick-fix meal deliveries. Despite my best efforts, the constant cycle of temporary fixes followed by chaotic setbacks has been frustrating.

This struggle led me to the idea of experimenting with meal replacement shakes. What did I want to achieve?

My #1 Goal - I want a fast & tasty meal, on the go

My #2 Goal - The meal should be healthy

My #3 Goal - I don't want to break the bank

So I decided to test 9 different options to find a convenient, healthy solution that fits nicely into my hectic lifestyle.

My aim was to identify the best shakes that provide the necessary nutrition and energy without the hassle of traditional dieting or counting calories, and to share my findings with others who face similar challenges.

Once I got started with these shakes I realized that not only was I eating healthier and more consistent calories, my whole body started feeling better as I wasn’t skipping the nutrients that I never knew I actually needed.

Some shakes were amazingly tasty... and some shakes were NASTY!

Testing methodology 👩🔬

Lineup of all the mixed meal replacements that I tested.

After realizing that I needed a more structured approach to finding the best meal replacement shakes, I dedicated myself to a thorough and methodical testing process. Over the course of 10 months, I spent more than $1800 to try and evaluate the most popular shakes advertised in the US.

I primarily used these shakes for my work lunches, wanting to see how they fit into my busy daily routine. Additionally, I experimented with different scenarios, such as using them for breakfast or as a quick snack, to determine their versatility and effectiveness in various real life contexts. This 10 month testing period allowed me to compare real life experiences and on-the-go calorie consumption. I wanted to identify the shakes that really offered convenience, nutrition, and satisfaction without compromising my health.

I set off to answer 2 key questions:

Key Question #1 – Does each shake taste good?

Key Question #2 – Is it a legitimate option for a lunch replacement?

TLDR - My Top Meal Replacement Shake: If you're short on time, my top choice is the Biome Secret Superfood Meal Replacement Shake. Not only does it taste the best, but it also has the highest nutritional values that doubled as a multivitamin + probiotic + had hunger suppression science behind it.

Comparing meal replacement shakes: a personal journey

Summary Comparison Chart

To create a scientific environment and replicate an apples-to-apples comparison, I only tested chocolate flavor shakes during this experiment.

I decided to make a simple chart summarizing my findings. This chart comes from my own trials and shows what I thought of each shake, how their flavor profiles stacked up against each shake's nutritional claims, how much each shake cost per meal, and whether the shakes gave me any unintended side effects.

I've ranked the shakes from most to least favored and scored them from 5 to 1, where 5 is the top score and 1 the lowest.

My Learnings about Nutrition from Meal Shakes

Since I invested $1800 into different shakes, I decided to start paying a lot of attention to the nutritional facts on all of these drinks I was trying. A few things really stood out to me.

Protein is not just for gym buffs: One significant takeaway from trying these shakes in real life is that protein is essential not just for athletes and gym buffs, but for everyone. Without adequate protein intake I found my body losing muscle mass. Protein supports metabolic functions, and ensures overall health. Many of the shakes provided a substantial amount of protein, which helped keep me full and energized throughout my busy workdays.

Not all calories are equal: Another important lesson learned from this experiment is that the quality of calories matters significantly. Some shakes were high in calories but low in essential nutrients, which can negatively impact overall diet and health. Consuming high-calorie foods with low nutritional value led me towards energy crashes and nutritional deficiencies, undermining the benefits of meal replacements.

Replicating natural flavor is challenging: One surprising discovery was the difficulty manufacturers face in replicating natural flavors in meal replacement shakes. Many shakes had overpowering tastes dominated by certain ingredients, making them less enjoyable to consume regularly. It was clear that the most common problem with some of these shakes was they were overly or artificially sweet.

Gut health is key in making you feel better: After trying numerous diets, supplements, and meal replacements, nothing has made me feel as good as some of these shakes. I've realized that gut health is the first step towards overall well-being. With a healthy balance of fiber, digestive enzymes, and probiotics, they've helped me reduce bloating, improve digestion, and have made a world of difference in my energy levels and overall health.

Feeling frustrated for a meal shake that tasted good, I tried all of the major brands but most left me ver disappointed.

Focusing on 9 Meal Replacement Shakes and Evaluating Them for Both Immediate Energy and Long Term Nutrition

I decided to try out 9 meal replacement shakes to see which one really worked for me. I didn't just want to eat empty calories; I also wanted to see how well each shake could impact my health and nutrition. Each option needed to be convenient and fit into my everyday life. I tried each shake brand for a week and looked at how well my body felt after drinking it, how clear my mental focus was, whether there were any bad side effects, how much it cost, and how easy it was to make it part of my daily routine.

Here is my own meal replacement shake evaluation methodology that I took into consideration:

🍩

Flavor & Taste: Did the shake taste real, or artificial?

🌀

Mixing & Texture: Was it easy to mix and was the shake's consistency appetizing?

💊

Vitamins & Nutrition: Would the shake be an improvement beyond my average lunch?

⚠️

Side Effects: What were the negative impacts on my health?

💰

Cost: How much did it set me back financially?

🏆 The best meal replacement for me:

Tasting Notes

Flavor

5/5 100% real chocolate flavor.

Texture

Balanced. Mostly smooth with some creamy texture.

Smell

Neutral. Subtle chocolate smell. Not overpowering.

Aftertaste

Non-lingering. No nasty aftertaste. Hints of chocolate.

Why I Chose To Try Biome Secret Superfood Meal Replacement Shakes

In my hectic life as a web designer, finding a healthy and convenient food option was a constant struggle. I was often tired, hungry, and found it hard to focus while skipping meals or eating “convenient” fast-food lunch options. Then I discovered Biome Secret Meal Replacement Shakes. They provided way more nutrition than my regular lunches, all without the hassle of meal prep or sacrificing taste. The simplicity of having a nutritious meal ready whenever I needed it was a game-changer, fitting perfectly into my busy routine.

How I Felt After Drinking Biome Secret Superfood Meal Replacement Shakes

Incorporating Biome Secret shakes into my daily routine significantly boosted my nutrient intake. Each shake is packed with 27 vitamins, 40g of protein, and 9g of fiber, which left me feeling more nourished and energized. This comprehensive nutritional profile actually made a noticeable difference in my overall health. I started noticing higher energy levels throughout my busy workdays, and I didn’t experience the post-lunch crash that I used to feel.

I was replacing one high-calorie or unhealthy meal, like fast food, with a Biome Secret meal replacement shake for 2 consecutive weeks (I liked it so much that I decided to use the whole pack before the next brand!). I definitely found myself feeling less bloated and more satisfied without the usual guilt or sluggishness that comes from eating unhealthy foods. The convenience of the shakes made it easy to stick to this healthier choice. I actually lost some fat weight during this time, and my friends commented on a slimmer face… but maybe they’re just being super nice to me!

The taste of the Biome Secret shakes was on another level in comparison to other shakes. The chocolate flavor tasted like real chocolate. There was absolutely no stevia aftertaste, and the flavor was so natural that I didn’t get tired it (my body actually started craving these after the 3rd day). I experienced no negative side effects, and the shakes were incredibly easy to mix in a shaker, which added to their on-the-go convenience. Overall, I felt healthier, more nourished, and ready to tackle my busy schedule without compromising my diet.

The shake was a real fill-me-up, packed with 100% veg-based ingredients, which kept hunger at bay. It gave me a much-needed energy boost and sharpened my focus, helping me ditch those slump moments in the middle of the day. The best part? I simply swapped one high-calorie meal—whether it was breakfast, lunch, or dinner—with this shake, and I actually lost some weight during my two weeks (while still enjoying traditional Saturday dinners with my whole family)!

Biome Secret Superfood Meal Replacement Shake prep was super easy.

Summary

Finding the Biome Secret Superfood Meal Replacement Shake was a turning point. These shakes became my go-to choice for meal replacements because of their comprehensive nutrition, delicious taste, and ease of use. Packed with 27 vitamins, 40g of protein, and 9g of fiber, they left me feeling nourished and energized. Replacing unhealthy meals with these shakes helped me reduce bloating and improve my overall health without any negative side effects. The taste, particularly the real chocolate flavor, made it enjoyable to drink every day, ensuring I looked forward to my meal replacements rather than seeing them as a chore.

What truly set Biome Secret shakes apart for me was their practicality. The individually portioned packs were a game-changer, making it easy to stay on track with daily healthy lunches. These pre-measured servings meant I always had a convenient, nutritious option I didn’t feel guilty about, perfectly fitting into my busy schedule without the hassle of meal prep.

And let’s not forget about the flavor… Biome Secret was the only shake I tried that actually tasted like real chocolate and didn’t have any strange aftertastes. The texture was balanced and a bit creamy, and reminded me of drinking a chocolate milkshake. The sweetness was also balanced - not overly rich so you could actually taste the raw cacao. To be honest - I almost felt guilty drinking these, because they tasted so good… I could have sworn it was almost like eating a dessert for lunch!

Surprise, pre-portioned packs! Easy to mix.

Balanced consistency with this shake.

Finally Found: A good tasting Meal Replacement that doesn't compromise my health

Tasting Notes

Flavor

4/5 Familiar chocolate taste, with hints of stevia.

Texture

Balanced. Smooth. Required vigorous shaking to mix.

Smell

Neutral. Hints of chocolate.

Aftertaste

Non-lingering. Slight stevia aftertaste. Also chocolate.

Why I Chose To Try The 310 Shake

The 310 Shake All-in-One Meal is marketed as a good choice for individuals seeking a plant-based protein source and a nutrient-rich meal replacement. It suits those who prefer vegan-friendly options, as it is free from gluten, dairy, soy, and artificial sweeteners. It is meant to promote flexibility for people who want to mix their shakes with either water or milk. Those who are conscious of their energy levels will appreciate this shake, as it provides good energy without causing crashes. It’s targeted for busy professionals or anyone looking for a convenient, healthy meal replacement that aligns with their dietary preferences and needs.

How I Felt After Drinking The 310 Shake

After drinking the 310 Shake, I felt good energy without any crashes, which was a pleasant surprise compared to some other shakes. My body tolerated it well, with no side effects or upset stomach. However, I did experience food cravings sooner than expected, about 1.5 hours after consumption. While the shake was chocolaty, there was a slight stevia aftertaste that some might find off-putting. Despite these minor drawbacks, the overall experience was positive, especially with the added benefit of a plant-based protein boost and a significant nutrient intake.

The 310 Shake being mixed. It required a bit more muscle to mix, but came out smooth.

Summary

While the 310 Shake was generally nice and smooth with a balanced chocolate flavor, I found the stevia aftertaste to be a bit too overpowering for my liking. Despite its great energy-boosting properties and impressive nutrient profile, the lingering sweetness of stevia made it less enjoyable to drink regularly. The 310 brand is definitely on the more expensive side, with the average meal price coming out to $4.29 per meal (the most expensive meal shake I tested). It's a solid choice for those who prioritize plant-based nutrition and don't mind the stevia taste, but for me, it was a bit of a deal-breaker.

What I liked

  1. High Texture Drink: More gritty/grainy than other shakes, if you're into that.

  2. Good Protein Source: Each serving contains 40g of plant based protein.

  3. Balanced Nutrients: Contains 27 vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B12 to boost my metabolism.

  4. Low Carbohydrate Version: Huel's most popular shake, with 24g of carbs.

  5. Flexible Dieting: suitable for vegans and gluten intolerant individuals

  6. Many Flavor Options: As of writing this, they have 9 flavors to choose from.

  7. Clean Branding: Company promotes transparency with its ingredients.

What could be better

  1. Not Satisfying: Despite Huel's claim that it should keep you feeling fuller for longer without cravings or the need for snacks, I still found it challenging to avoid reaching for an extra snack like a granola or protein bar to achieve fullness.

  2. Some Stomach Discomfort: The shake felt very "heavy" in my lower stomach.

  3. Grainy Texture: When shaken, the powder doesn't mix well, leaving a gritty feeling that's less enjoyable to drink.

Tasting Notes

Flavor

4/5 Chocolate was less sweet than others.

Texture

Grainy / Gritty. A lot of particles in this shake gave it a coarse texture.

Smell

Strong plastic odor. Chocolate was overpowered by a plastic packaging smell.

Aftertaste

Banana!? Shifted from an initial chocolate flavor towards a distinct banana flavor.

Why I Chose To Try Huel Black Complete Meal

I decided to try Huel Black Edition because it offered a high-protein, low-carbohydrate option with 40g of plant-based protein per serving and 27 essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B12. The shake's suitability for vegan and gluten-intolerant diets, combined with the brand's clean and transparent ingredient sourcing, made it an attractive choice. Additionally, Huel's variety of flavors promised to keep my taste buds interested, and the flexible dieting aspect seemed perfect for my busy lifestyle.

How I Felt After Drinking Huel Black Complete Meal

Drinking Huel Black Edition left me with mixed feelings. While the high protein content and balanced nutrients were a plus, I found the grainy texture less enjoyable, as it didn't mix well and felt gritty. To improve this, I started using a blender instead of the shaker, though this did reduce some of the convenience. The chocolate flavor was decent but marred by a strong plastic odor and an unexpected banana aftertaste. Despite its claims of keeping me full, I still experienced cravings and found myself reaching for additional snacks to feel satisfied (to stay full until dinner, I occasionally needed a granola or protein bar). I felt that my brain needed more sustenance to keep going. Moreover, the shake felt heavy in my lower stomach, leading to some discomfort. Overall, while Huel Black Edition had its nutritional benefits, the texture and aftertaste issues made it less appealing for regular use.

Huel Black Complete Meal didn't mix well, but the flavor was pretty ok.

Summary

While Huel Black Edition was worth a try for its impressive nutritional profile and high protein content, I ultimately decided not to continue using it. The strange banana aftertaste, which shifted from the initial chocolate flavor, made it less enjoyable to drink regularly. Additionally, the chocolate flavor itself was not as intense as I had hoped, lacking the richness I look for in a meal replacement shake. The gritty texture was another significant drawback; the powder didn't mix well, leaving a coarse feeling that was far from pleasant.

Adding to the inconvenience, the shake didn’t come with a measuring scoop. This oversight meant I had to pre-measure my shakes into ziplock bags to take them to work, complicating my morning routine. These drawbacks, including the inconvenient preparation, the off-putting texture, and the unsatisfactory flavor, outweighed the nutritional benefits for me.

After a few minutes there was a lot of sediment in the Huel sake. I think you could only drink this shake very quickly for it to still taste good.

What I liked

  1. Organic & Clean: Made from wholly organic ingredients, free from dairy.

  2. Superfood Dense: Contains 44 superfoods per serving.

  3. No Added Sugar: Keeps calories very low (150 per serving).

  4. Probiotics: Added in for helping digest all of the superfood ingredients.

  5. Water or Almond Milk: Get added flavor when mixing with almond milk vs. with water.

What could be better

  1. Low Vitamins: Only 18 vitamins in this mix.

  2. Low Protein: Compared to other shakes, this only had 20g per serving.

  3. Long Ingredients List: Too many ingredients in this shake, making for a funky flavor and not actually giving you the high nutrients you'd expect from any individual superfood ingredient.

Tasting Notes

Flavor

3/5 Muted, earthy chocolate flavor.

Texture

Some grains. About 50% less grain tha Huel had.

Smell

Green vegetables. Very strong smell of green veg mixed with chocolate.

Aftertaste

Mild spinach. Minimal chocolate is overpowered by lingering greens.

Why I Chose to Try Garden of Life Raw Meal Shakes

It's worth mentioning that Garden of Life was acquired by Nestlé in 2017. This acquisition has led to mixed reviews among consumers. I chose to try Garden of Life Raw Meal because of its commitment to organic, clean ingredients and the impressive inclusion of 44 superfoods per serving. The promise of no added sugars and a low-calorie count of just 150 per serving made it an attractive option for my health-conscious lifestyle. Additionally, the added probiotics for digestive support and the versatility to mix it with either water or almond milk for enhanced flavor were key factors in my decision.

How I Felt After Drinking Garden of Life Raw Meal Shakes

After drinking Garden of Life Raw Meal Shakes, I appreciated its digestive benefits, likely due to the added probiotics. However, the taste was a bit too earthy and subdued, with the mild chocolate flavor being overshadowed by the strong presence of green vegetables and a lingering spinach aftertaste.

The texture, while less gritty than some other shakes, still had noticeable grains. Despite the superfood content, the lower protein level left me feeling less satiated, and the extensive ingredient list contributed to a complex and somewhat off-putting flavor. While the shake’s organic and clean qualities might be a deciding factor for some people, the taste and texture did not fully meet my expectations.

The smell of greens was very strong in this shake, and I found it a big too much at times. On one occasion I experienced some nausea and irregular bowel movements after trying this shake.

Garden of Life started to visibly separate (and not stay mixed) after just 2 minutes.

Summary

I chose to rate Garden of Life Raw Meal comparatively high primarily due to its impressive inclusion of 44 superfoods, making it a genuine option for those seeking a nutrient-dense shake that is specifically superfood based. The organic and clean ingredients appeal to health-conscious consumers who prioritize natural products.

However, the shake has a very strong green vegetable smell, which can be off-putting for many people (it gave me nausea). Despite the earthy, muted chocolate flavor and grainy texture, its benefits in terms of superfood content and digestive support through added probiotics can make it a consideration for those who can tolerate the strong vegetable aroma.

What I liked

  1. Sweet Flavor: This was the sweetest chocolate flavor of any shake.

  2. Cost: Dirt cheap...

  3. Widely Distributed: Sold in a lot of stores in my area, so you could by locally and not just online.

  4. Thick Texture: A noticeably thicker shake than any of the others.

What could be better

  1. Sugar + Sugar + Sugar: This was the only shake that actually had added sugar. And it's the 1st listed ingredient!!

  2. Bad Side Effects: Experienced some headaches, sugar crashes, and mood changes.

  3. Low Nutritional Value: The ingredients in this mix do not substantially replace nutrition I was getting in a typical lunch.

  4. Shrinkflation: The package contained 7% less actual shake powder than was stated on the front panel!

  5. More of a Dessert: Even their serving suggestion implied drizzling chocolate onto this shake. Not a healthy option.

Tasting Notes

Flavor

5/5 Super sweet chocolate pudding.

Texture

Very thick. The thickest shake I tried.

Smell

Deep chocolate. Smelled exactly like what you would expect from chocolate.

Aftertaste

Sugary chocolate. Chocolate brownie aftertaste without any chemical undertones.

Why I Chose to Try SlimFast Original Meal Shakes

As a well-known brand with a long-standing reputation, I had high expectations for SlimFast Original Meal Shakes. The promise of a sweet chocolate flavor and a thick texture was enticing, especially for someone with a sweet tooth like mine. Plus, its dirt-cheap cost and wide availability in local stores made it a convenient option. I was curious to see if this classic diet shake could live up to its name and provide a satisfying meal replacement that fit easily into my busy schedule.

How I Felt After Drinking SlimFast Original Meal Shakes

Drinking SlimFast Original Meal Shakes was a bit of a rollercoaster. On the positive side, the flavor was incredibly sweet, like a chocolate pudding, and the thick texture made it feel more substantial. However, the high sugar content, with sugar listed as the first ingredient, led to some not-so-pleasant side effects. I experienced headaches, sugar crashes, and mood changes, which were disappointing. The low nutritional value left me feeling hungry soon after (just 1.5 hours after drinking the shake), and the packaging had less powder than advertised, which felt like a letdown. While the taste was indulgent, it felt more like a dessert than a healthy meal replacement, making it hard to consider as a viable daily option.

False advertising! The unopened pack of Slimfast actually contained 7% less weight vs. what was meant to be in the pack!? 😠

Summary

In my experience, SlimFast Original Meal Shakes were a bit of a mixed bag. The sweet, chocolatey flavor and thick texture made it feel like an indulgent treat, which was a nice break from some of the more bland shakes I’ve tried. Its affordability and wide availability in local stores were definite pluses, making it convenient to grab and go.

While SlimFast Original Meal Shake might tempt you with its sweet, chocolatey flavor and thick texture, it's important to consider its nutritional profile. Compared to other meal replacement shakes, the nutritional values are quite low. The shake contains added sugar as the first ingredient, which is a red flag for those seeking a healthy, balanced meal replacement. This high sugar content can lead to unwanted side effects like headaches, sugar crashes, and mood swings. Additionally, the overall nutrient density is quite low, meaning it doesn't provide the essential vitamins and minerals you'd expect from a meal replacement. If you're looking for a shake that supports sustained energy and satiety, you might want to consider other options with higher nutritional value and lower sugar content.

What I liked

  1. Source of Greens: Would be popular with individuals seeking a "greens shake".

  2. Sugar Free: Only uses natural ingredients for flavoring and sweetness.

  3. Designed For Vegans: All ingredients are 100% vegan friendly.

  4. Low Calorie: A single serving is just 150 calories, equalling a light snack.

  5. Omega-3 ALA: Contains a healthy 500mg of omega-3 per serving.

What could be better

  1. Difficult To Keep Mixed: The ingredients in this shake did not like being mixed, and separated very quickly.

  2. Low Vitamin Values: The lowest vitamin count of any tested shake, just 14.

  3. Overpowering Smell: A very strong chemical smell made this shake highly unappetizing to me.

  4. Taste: The greens and chemical smells overpowered any remaining hints of chocolate flavor in this shake.

Tasting Notes

Flavor

1/5 Tasted like celery mixed with paint. Almost no chocolate.

Texture

Very watery. The thinnest shake I tried, lacking substance. Separated quickly.

Smell

Paint thinner. Very overpowering artificial chemical smell resembling paint thinner.

Aftertaste

Chemical. Almost no chocolate aftertaste, overpowered by chemical flavor.

Why I Chose to Try Vega Organic All-In-One Shake

I decided to give Vega Organic All-In-One Shake a try because of its emphasis on clean, plant-based nutrition. As someone who values vegan-friendly products, the fact that all ingredients are 100% vegan and organic was a big plus. The shake is also sugar-free, using only natural ingredients for flavoring and sweetness, which appealed to my desire for healthier options. Additionally, the low-calorie count of just 150 per serving and the inclusion of 500mg of omega-3 ALA made it an attractive choice for a light, nutritious snack that could support my overall health.

How I Felt After Drinking Vega Organic All-In-One Shake

Unfortunately, my experience with Vega Organic All-In-One Shake was not as positive as I had hoped. The shake was difficult to keep mixed, with the ingredients separating quickly, resulting in a very watery texture. The low vitamin count of just 14 was disappointing, especially compared to other shakes I tested. The most off-putting aspect was the overpowering chemical smell, which reminded me of paint thinner, and it carried through to the taste, overshadowing any chocolate flavor. The overall experience was unappetizing, making it hard to enjoy the shake despite its promising nutritional benefits.

Vega Organic experienced the largest amount of separation after mixing. Photo taken 2 minutes after being shaken vigorously.

Summary

One of the most frustrating aspects of the Vega Organic All-In-One Shake was how quickly it separated after mixing. Despite my best efforts to blend it thoroughly, within about two minutes, the shake began to form a slushy layer of green particles floating at the top, which refused to integrate with the remaining liquid. This left an unappetizing mix that was difficult to drink. Additionally, there was a noticeable sediment that settled at the bottom, adding to the unpleasant texture. These separation issues significantly detracted from the overall experience, making the shake challenging to enjoy even with vigorous mixing.

Despite its strong appeal with clean, plant-based, vegan-friendly ingredients, and a commendable low-calorie count, Vega Organic All-In-One Shake fell short in my experience. The difficulty in keeping the ingredients mixed led to a very watery texture, and the shake had the lowest vitamin count of any I tested, with just 14 vitamins. The most significant downside was the overpowering chemical smell and taste, which reminded me of paint thinner and overshadowed any chocolate flavor. While it has potential benefits like being sugar-free and including omega-3 ALA, the unappetizing smell and taste made it hard to enjoy. This shake might appeal to those strictly seeking vegan and organic options, but for me, the overall experience did not make me want to come back for more.

What I liked

  1. Low Glycemic Index: Certified and measured as a 19 on the GI scale.

  2. Midrange Price: More affordable than 1/2 of the other shakes.

  3. Famous Brand: Well established and long standing company.

  4. Several Flavor Options: 15 available flavors means that you could structure a diet that you won't get tired of from being overly repetitive.

  5. Gluten Free: Suitable for people with gluten intolerances.

What could be better

  1. Digestion Side Effects: I experienced a lot of bloating and constipation.

  2. High Carbohydrates: This shake had the highest carbohydrate composition of any tested shake.

  3. Unpleasant Aftertaste: Left an unusual flavor of eggs and metal, rather than chocolate.

  4. Lowest Protein & Fiber: Only 9 g. of protein and 3 g. of fiber.

Tasting Notes

Flavor

1/5 Hard to describe but it did not resemble a chocolate taste.

Texture

Watery / Inconsistent. Foamy and watery. Too smooth to be appetizing.

Smell

Eggs. Metal. Strong odor of eggs or sulphur, mixed with something metallic.

Aftertaste

Bland. Metallic aftertaste.

Why I Chose to Try Herbalife Nutritional Shakes

I wanted to try the Herbalife Nutritional Shake because of its well-established reputation and the promise of a low glycemic index, which was certified and measured at 19 on the GI scale. The midrange price made it more affordable compared to many other shakes I tested. Additionally, the shake's gluten-free formula and the availability of 15 different flavors were appealing, offering the potential to maintain variety in my diet without the risk of getting bored.

How I Felt After Drinking Herbalife Nutritional Shakes

My experience with the Herbalife Nutritional Shake was not what I expected. While I appreciated the low glycemic index and the range of flavors, the shake fell short in several key areas. The texture was watery and inconsistent, often foamy and too smooth to be appetizing.

The flavor was difficult to describe and did not resemble chocolate, as it had an unusual taste with hints of eggs and metal. This unpleasant aftertaste lingered, making it hard to enjoy. Moreover, I experienced significant digestion issues, including bloating and constipation, likely due to the high carbohydrate content and low protein and fiber levels. Overall, the shake did not meet my expectations and I would not actively choose to have this as a meal replacement for lunch.

While Herbalife might be a familiar name to many of us, the smell and taste was absolutely unlike any chocolate I've ever tasted. Very metallic and eggy.

Summary

Herbalife Nutritional Shakes offer some benefits, such as a low glycemic index and gluten-free ingredients, but my experience was less than ideal. The watery and foamy texture, combined with a strange egg and metallic taste, made it unappealing. Additionally, the low protein and fiber content, coupled with high carbohydrates, led to digestion issues like bloating and constipation.

Despite the brand's reputation and the variety of flavors, this shake did not provide the satisfying and nutritious meal replacement I was hoping for.

  1. High In Vitamins: Offers balanced nutrition with 28 vitamins and minerals.

  2. Affordable: The manufacturer takes a basic approach to ingredient choices, which keeps costs low.

  3. Plant Based: Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

  4. Dairy Free: Suitable for people with milk intolerances.

What could be better

  1. Low in Protein: One of the lowest protein values of any tested shake, at 13 g. per serving.

  2. Low Fiber: Disappointing 4 g. of fiber per serving.

  3. Texture: Difficult to mix powder left the shake inconsistently clumpy with an irregular texture.

  4. Controversial Ingredients: Some low value ingredients (canola oil, maltodextrin etc) have been in the news for various health concerns.

Tasting Notes

1/5 Chocolate mixed with celery and kale greens.

Texture

Why I Chose to Try Soylent Powdered Food

Soylent Powdered Food promised a balanced nutritional profile with 28 vitamins and minerals, which is great for someone like me who is always on the go. The affordability was another significant factor, as the manufacturer’s basic approach to ingredients helps keep costs low. As a plant-based, dairy-free option, it seemed like a versatile choice that would fit well with a variety of dietary needs, including those of vegetarians and vegans.

How I Felt After Drinking Soylent Powdered Food

My experience with Soylent Powdered Food was quite underwhelming and unfortunately, rather unpleasant. Although it offered a high vitamin content, the low protein (13g per serving) and fiber (4g per serving) levels left me feeling unsatisfied and I found myself snacking soon after.

The texture was another issue. Despite my efforts to mix it well, the shake remained inconsistently clumpy and had a watery, irregular texture. The flavor was disappointing too, with an odd mix of chocolate, celery, and kale that didn't blend well.

There was an artificial smell and aftertaste of chemical sweeteners that was quite off-putting, making it difficult to enjoy the shake fully. Additionally, I experienced bad anxiety and stomach issues, including diarrhea, after consuming the shake, which was quite distressing. I couldn’t help but to think that some of these side effects might be caused because of low-quality or cheap ingredients that the manufacturer was using. I guess this might be the reason this shake mix was so cheap?

Even after extended mixing, Soylent had a lot of floating particles that did not blend together.

Summary

Soylent Powdered Food has its merits, including a high vitamin and mineral content and affordability, but my overall experience was not positive. The low protein and fiber levels did not keep me full, and the difficult-to-mix texture was a major drawback.

The taste, with its strange blend of chocolate, celery, and kale, combined with an artificial smell and aftertaste, made it hard to enjoy. Additionally, the shake caused me to experience anxiety and stomach issues, including diarrhea, which significantly impacted my experience.

The presence of controversial ingredients like canola oil and maltodextrin added to my concerns. Although it might work for some, it did not meet my expectations for a satisfying and nutritious meal replacement.

  2. Good Vitamin Mix: Has 26 vitamins and minerals per serving.

  3. Supports Digestive Health: Contains prebiotics and probiotics.

  4. Midrange Fiber: Kachava takes a balanced approach to fiber dosage, with 7 g. per serving.

What could be better

  1. Flavor: The chocolate shake was overpowered by the vegetable greens, leaving a chemical sweetener aftertaste.

  2. Not A Suitable Meal: Because this shake is low in calories, I found myself hungry in just over 2 hours.

Tasting Notes

1/5 Dark chocolate with unfamiliar chemical egg flavor.

Why I Chose Kachava Whole Body Meal

I decided to try the Kachava Whole Body Meal because of its impressive ingredient list and potential health benefits. Each serving contains a blend of 17 supergreen vegetables, 26 vitamins and minerals, and prebiotics and probiotics to support digestive health. Additionally, the shake includes 25 grams of plant-based protein from pea and brown rice sources, which is midrange for a meal replacement. The promise of balanced nutrition with a midrange fiber content of 7 grams per serving made it a potentially well-rounded option worth considering for a lunch replacement.

How I Felt After Drinking Kachava Whole Body Meal

While the Kachava shake's nutrient profile boasts benefits from several vegetables and supergreens, the flavor was a significant downside. The chocolate taste was overwhelmed by the strong presence of vegetable greens, leaving a lingering chemical sweetener aftertaste. I was surprised that the texture was relatively smooth after mixing, considering this shake was the lumpiest one from the start. The smell of raw vegetables was off-putting. Despite the high protein and fiber content, I found myself feeling hungry just over two hours after consuming it, which suggests that it wasn't substantial enough as a meal replacement for me. Additionally, the cost per serving is quite high, making it an expensive option for daily use.

Kachava was clumpy at the start but mixed ok. Flavor left an eggy aftertaste.

Summary

While Kachava Whole Body Meal offers a comprehensive blend of supergreens, vitamins, and digestive aids, it might be better suited for those looking for a robust greens supplement rather than a complete meal replacement. I really had to knock off a few points on my rating because of how hungry this shake left me feeling.

The strong vegetable taste and chemical aftertaste, combined with its relatively low calorie content, make it less effective at satisfying hunger for extended periods. If your primary goal is to boost your intake of greens and micronutrients, Kachava could be a great supplement to your diet. However, since I was seeking a more substantial meal replacement that wouldn’t leave me snacky, I did not find Kachava to be a suitable meal replacement that would leave me satisfied.

The verdict

Out of all meal replacement shakes tried, I ultimately chose Biome Secret Superfood Meal Replacement Shakes.

For a long time, I struggled with maintaining a healthy diet during my busy workdays. Often, I found myself skipping lunches entirely or resorting to fast food, which left me feeling sluggish and unsatisfied. The cycle of unhealthy eating and missing meals was taking a toll on my energy levels and overall well-being.

Fast food and other quick fixes might have been convenient, but they came with significant downsides. High in calories and low in nutritional value, these meals left me feeling bloated and drained. I knew I needed a better solution to support my hectic lifestyle and keep me feeling energized and healthy throughout the day.

Determined to find a more effective and convenient option, I set a goal to completely replace my meals with a simpler shake solution. Meal replacement shakes promised to be a quick, nutritious alternative that could save me time and ensure I got the essential nutrients I needed. The idea of having a healthy meal ready in minutes was incredibly appealing.

After being bombarded with various marketing materials, I decided to test the most popular meal replacement shakes available on the market. I wanted to find out which ones could truly deliver on their promises of convenience and nutrition. The experiment was thorough, taking me 10 months and costing over $1800 to evaluate a range of shakes under real-life conditions.

Throughout my testing, I discovered several recurring downsides with the worst-performing shakes. Some had overpowering artificial flavors, others had unpleasant textures, and many failed to keep me full or satisfied. Issues like high sugar content, low protein levels, and digestive discomfort were frequent deal-breakers. These experiences underscored the importance of finding a shake that balanced taste, nutrition, and satiety.

Then I found the Biome Secret SuperfoodMeal Replacement Shake, and let me tell you, it was a game-changer. This shake felt like I was feeding my body everything good it had been missing out on. Imagine getting the protein you'd find in a whole chicken breast, the fiber of three whole heads of broccoli, and all the vitamins and minerals of a huge, colorful salad, all in one tasty drink. It was more than just a convenient meal substitute; it was like a nutritional treasure trove that slotted right into my daily life without any hassle.

Now I have an easy, healthy, fast lunch replacement that I can bring anywhere with me. Takes 10 seconds to mix. Amazing real chocolate flavor (it also comes in Vanilla-Caramel).

What really set this shake apart for me was how it tackled all my nutrition and health needs in one go. It helped me replace bad calories that I was previously eating with nutrient dense ones that my body was craving. The bloating and constipation I suffered - gone, thanks to the shake's rich fiber content, along with a helpful mix of prebiotics, probiotics, and digestive enzymes that got my gut health back on track. No more feeling like I was five months pregnant all the time!

But the benefits didn't stop there. I was supercharging my body with 80% of my daily protein needs and 27 essential vitamins and minerals every single day. And the best part? It was all from whole-food sourced ingredients, without any of the stuff I try to avoid, like gluten, GMOs, lactose, nuts, soy, hormones, added sugars, and trans fats.

So, when I weigh all my options, choosing the Biome Secret Superfood Meal Replacement Shake is a no-brainer. It's not just another product; it's a comprehensive health boost that's perfect for anyone looking to have an easy meal on the go and feel amazing. After all the shakes, meal hacks, missed lunches and calorie replacements I've tried, nothing has made me feel as good as this shake. It's been a real winner for me.
